Education system of Nizhny Novgorod

The following is the set of main activity lines of municipal education system that has not only retained its positions but rather improved them in the course of the last two years:

- to ensure that the state guarantees equal educational opportunities;
- to achieve the new quality level of pre-school and general education;
- to develop education as an open state-public system.

Education system of the city makes up a network of educational institutions. It contains all types of educational institutions enabling realization of education programs on different levels as well as support of supplementary education system for children and adolescents.

There are 327 pre-school educational institutions attended by 43 685 children.

All in all, pre-school educational institutions feature 11 specialities.

Pre-school educational institutions make a basis for 17 experimental site introducing health-saving technologies.

Education system of Nizhny Novgorod is 198 secondary educational institutions attended by more than 157 th. pupils. This total includes: primary, general and secondary schools (228), a military school, 11 evening schools, 23 boarding schools, a country-boarding school, 45 supplementary education institutions and 45 professional training centers.
Advanced education programs are implemented on the basis of lyceums, grammar schools and advanced training classes (35 subjects). This list includes linguistically directed grammar schools (¹1, 13, 67, pedagogical grammar school and others) participating in various international projects and programs that foster advanced country-study, linguistic and inter-cultural learning. A special place in mathematical education takes lyceum ¹40, renowned inside and outside Russia due to numerous awards in international competitions.
In more than 70% of schools there is division of pupils into profile classes. These schools offer 26 profile programs, special training courses on the basis of higher education institutions.
Thus, there are educational institutions of all types in Nizhny Novgorod, implementing educational programs on different levels.
The basis for supplementary education is created with the Chkalov Palace of Youth Creativity and District Centers of supplementary education, station of young technicians, Children's Railway, local leisure centers and clubs, sports schools and centers.
75% of pupils attend 67 institutions of supplementary education offering diverse trends.
All in all these institutions are attended by 66200 children and adolescents.
Social program "Little orphans" is aimed at prevention of uncontrolled growth of orphanage .
For this purpose, the program has fostered creation of orphan's homes, rehabilitation centers, children's homes and 2 family children's homes as well as developed new profiles of labor training.
There have appeared new mechanisms for setting orphans and children without custody of parents into new families.
Program "Healthy child" successfully operates in Nizhny Novgorod creating sanitary centers in schools.
47 schools have joined "School of Health" Association.
17 pre-school educational institutions and 26 schools have experimental sites for introduction of health-saving technologies into the process of studying.
"Gifted children" program has helped to create address support for gifted children. 78-85% of 8-9 formers annually take part in district, city and regional competitions, city forum "Gifted children", city conference of scientific society of students.
To support award winners of interregional, all-Russian, international competitions, 30 name grants of City Administration of Nizhny Novgorod have been established; annually competition winners and teachers are awarded with prizes and valuable gifts.
Nizhny Novgorod Forum "Budding Geniuses" was started in October, 1999. It actively cooperates with British Council, French Regional Center and leading higher education institution of Nizhny Novgorod. Since the start-up, 2850 participants have attended the forum. Year by year the number of gold and silver medallists - school graduates - augments. In 2002 379 graduates were awarded with gold medals, 566 - silver medals.
In 2002 24 pupils of Nizhny Novgorod schools became winners of regional and international competitions. Primarily, these are students of lyceums ¹40, 165, 87, Nizhny Novgorod pedagogical grammar school and other.
More than 3000 students have joined numerous sections of municipal scientific society.
Such programs like "Youth of Nizhny Novgorod", city project "We are together", purpose program of parental training successfully operate in Nizhny Novgorod, as well as club "Family and me", parental cultural center "Shtok".
While continuing work on priority lines of activity, in 2003 education system of Nizhny Novgorod will concentrate its efforts on modernization of education on all-Russia scale.
