Transport and Communications
An advantageous geographical location and a traditional
role of Nizhny Novgorod as a trade center gave premises for creation of
a comparatively high-developed transport infrastructure. Railways, motor
roads, water- and airways conveniently connect Nizhny Novgorod with any
Russian region, the CIS and foreign states.

The Nizhny Novgorod transport junction, which includes 3
railway stations, a river port, a steamery, an international airport "Nizhny
Novgorod", 2 lanes of lending of all types of planes, is one of the
most visited and sophisticated in Russia. Rivers and channels connect
Nizhny Novgorod with 5 seas and afterwards an exit into the ports of the
Scandinavic countries, the Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.
The location of the City in dozens of kms. along the rivers, its occupied
area, almost 1,5 mls. of population made outlines of a complicated structure
and a size of the City's transport system.
The
City's public transport is represented by buses, trams, trolley buses,
a subway and taxis.
The public transport's route network development has attained quite high
figures.
The route network today, that is 20 trolley bus and 20 tram itineraries,
114 bus itineraries of municipal and state enterprises. In addition to
it, the private sector has developed lately, and today 87 bus itineraries
are of private enterprises servicing. Nizhny Novgorod subway lines has
a total length of 14 kms. and 13 stations.
In order to provide effectiveness of the transport work
in the City a decision was made to extend a subway line "Avtozavodskaya
- Nizhegorodskaya" to an upper part of the City up to a station "Gorkovskaya"
with building of a subway bridge across the Oka river.
Communications in the city are growning at a rapid rate. Modern technologies
are broadly introduced in the city: digital fiber optic lines, wireless
broadband access, cellular, cablecasting, IP telephony.
Nizhny Novgorod branch office of open joint stock company "VolgaTelecom"
is a first-rate company in the city communications market. During the
last five years this company set over 100 000 telephone numbers in operation
in Nizhny Novgorod. Owing to this fact, the amount of numbers in the city
has amounted to 87 issues for 100 families. About 10 average and minor
communication operators render wire telephony service as well. The telephone
set queue is presumed to be abolished in 2003-2004. All major communication
operators actively attract investments for communication service development.
Besides wire telephony communication companies there are 7 cellular and
3 paging companies, over 10 Internet-providers and 2 cablecasting operators
successfully functioning in the city.
Traditional media outlets include 16 television channels (with 6 local
among them), a great number of radio stations, newspapers and magazines.
